literature and film 2013

« back
The Conrad Festival, which begins next week, does not only involve literature. It also includes a rich and diverse film programme accompanying meetings with authors. This year, together with the Kino Pod Baranami cinema, we would like to invite everyone to the review of the works by the Brothers Quay, screenings of two excellent Iranian films directed by Asghar Farhadi – A Separation, awarded with an Oscar, and his latest production – The Past, as well as Literary Lambs for Children, a special festival film section for the little ones, as part of which Pinocchio and Plastusiowy Pamiętnik will be screened. We would like to remind all cinema-lovers that the Brothers Quay will appear in Krakow and maybe watch their films together with the festival audience. You will definitely meet them at the screening of The Piano Tuner of Earthquakes on Friday (the 25th of October, 9:30 p.m.) – before the screening begins, they will introduce the audience to the atmosphere of their cinema. A meeting with the Quay Brothers, open to the public, will take place on Friday (the 25th of October) at 6:30 p.m. It will be hosted by Agnieszka Taborska and Marcin Giżycki.

Description Max Ernst: Journey into the Subconscious (Max Ernst: Mein Vagabundieren – Meine Unruhe), Germany 1991, a documentary
Directed by: Peter Schamoni

A documentary produced on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of Max Ernst’s birthday. It is a film collage of archival materials and historic photos taken by the artist himself, as well as new shots filmed by the authors of the film in the United States, France, and Germany. It also contains fragments of films in which Ernst took part, such as Luis Buñuel’s Golden Age and Hans Richter’s 8x8. The director used both interviews with Ernst and statements of people connected with him, richly illustrated with the works of the German artist.

Description How to make a book with Steidl,
Germany, 2010, a documentary, direction: Gereon Wetzel, Jörg Adolph

Gerhard Steidl is the owner of the famous publishing house in Göttingen, where the greatest albums in the world are produced. There is only one rule here: first comes the idea, and only then does the book. 40 years ago, this surprising marketing approach turned out to be effective and became the beginning of the staggering career of Steidl, who was 19 at the time. Thanks to that, the greatest and most highly-regarded photographers and artists are queuing up to work with Steidl.

Description Dreams That Money Can Buy,
USA, 1946, direction: Hans Richter

This is one of the most important films documenting the period of the first avant-garde, consisting of seven episodes combined into a whole by Hans Richter. The first episode is a miniature costume drama, whose author is Max Ernst, the film’s co-director and co-author of the screenplay. The subsequent ones were produced by Fernand Léger, Man Ray, Marcel Duchamp, and Alexander Kalder. The last part, directed by Richter himself, presents a man combining the individual episodes. Although the film is already 70 years old, it is still considered to be one of the leading pictures presenting avant-garde artists, whose then-innovative ideas had an enormous influence on later cinematography.

The event accompanies the Lover of Imagination exhibition.

Description tvSSFBM EHKL - Surreal Film,
United Kingdom, 2001, direction: Francis Hanley, artists: Salvador Dali, Max Ernst, Louis Buñuel

British journalist and author Jonathan Meades produced a documentary on surrealism for the BBC. The odd title of this production, tvSSFMB EHKL, is an encrypted phrase for Surreal Film, and the film itself is a psychedelic journey across a surreal world, filled with humour. It presents both the sources and the most important features of this art direction. Meades, whom we can watch in the film as the presenter, introduces both the most famous artists of the movement: Salvador Dali, Max Ernst, and Luis Buñuel, and fictional characters from Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland.

The event accompanies the Lover of Imagination exhibition.
